Temporarily Closed While We Relocate

admin on Jan 8th 2010

We’re moving!! This change is long overdue - instead of having two facility’s, we will now have one.

This last year has been exceptionally difficult for me personally, I got divorced, am now a single mom of 4, but more importantly, I lost my dad and business partner to the devastating and cruel disease of MS (multiple sclerosis). It’s been a very difficult transition not having his insight and business know-how, and mainly just not having his companionship. His presence has been pivotal throughout this journey of sculpting Caterpillars into the business it now is. Consequently, I’ve decided to move closer to my family, and to our second location, which will become our first/only candleshop.  I have a new business plan and feel confident that good things are in store for Caterpillars in 2010!!

We are currently closed and not accepting any new orders.  All orders that have been placed are being processed and we hope to have them all shipped by Monday January 11th.  We will re-open on or around January 20th.

Thank you for your patience and for your business! We wouldn’t be where we are without our great and loyal customers!

Also, we currently have no way to access our voicemail so if you need to reach us, or have been trying, please send email to sales {at} caterpillars candles [dot] com.

Kindly,

Jennifer

Sustainable Homes

admin on Mar 7th 2009

My dream home is a dome home.. I just love how energy efficient they are, the curves inside, the light reflections..and they are affordable! I thought that was what I wanted…until now.  Watch the video’s below about earthships..they are pretty amazing! If communities all across this great nation and around the world would build these types of homes, think about the positive impact that would have on our environment!!

Why New Years Resolutions Don’t Work

admin on Dec 26th 2008

You can forget about making New Year’s Resolutions if you’re hoping for a successful outcome. Most aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. Have you ever really lost weight or stuck to a plan when you made a new years resolution? Really, I’d like to know! Most of my resolutions in years past have fallen by the wayside, like some long forgotten wad of gum spit out the car window wallowing in the dirt on the side of the road. I couldn’t tell you what they were and in fact, there were quite a few years where I just didn’t bother making one at all.new years resolutions

The reason is pretty simple. Most resolutions are made in response to something negative; a habit or situation that the person wants to change or end. I’m guilty of that in creating past-years’ resolutions. And therein lies the problem - it’s hard to develop momentum from a negative response. It is always easier to move toward something than away from something.

Consider one of the most adopted goals — weight loss. Not many people get excited about losing weight - it requires deprivation. It’s a negative response to concerns about appearance, health, self-esteem…

The results of weight loss New Year’s Resolutions demonstrate their weakness.

People who succeed at losing weight and maintaining the loss have usually been motivated by a dream much bigger and more positive than just losing weight. They see themselves living a healthy lifestyle. They begin to act and think like people who are in good physical shape. There’s more of a radical change in a person’s thinking and actions than you see with most resolutions. It wouldn’t be possible to effect and sustain such a radical change unless the person is motivated by a big dream that is positive in nature.

Take some time and think about it, create a plan for your life based on a set of personal dreams based on a positive outcome.

Most people are in a free-fall through life, careening from one crisis to the next. If you were going to build a new house and you had this idea for a fabulous master bedroom suite, you wouldn’t rush out and start building the master bedroom. You’d have a complete plan before you started. When you approach resolutions and goals in the same manner, you end up with a much better chance of achieving success.

Genetically Modified Food - Bad for You and Mice Too!

admin on Sep 16th 2008

Schools in Wisconsin are showing kids the dangers of genetically engineered (GE) junk food with some unique science class experiments.

Sister Luigi Frigo repeats the experiment every year in her second grade class in Cudahy. Students feed one group of mice unprocessed whole foods. A second group of mice are given the same junk foods served at most schools.

Within a couple of days, the behavior of the second group of mice develop erratic sleeping schedules and become lazy, nervous and even violent.

It takes the mice about three weeks on unprocessed foods to return to normal. According to Frigo, the second graders tried to do the experiment again a few months later with the same mice, but the animals have already learned their lesson and refuse to eat the GE food.

We are just beginning to understand the influence of food on behavior. A study in Science in December 2002 concluded that “food molecules act like hormones, regulating body functioning and triggering cell division. The molecules can cause mental imbalances ranging from attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder to serious mental illness.” The problem is we do not know which food molecules have what effect.

Differences in GM food will likely have a much larger impact on children. They are three to four times more susceptible to allergies. Also, they convert more of the food into body-building material. Altered nutrients or added toxins can result in developmental problems.

The bigger problem is that the composition of GM foods can change radically without our knowledge. Genetically modified foods have genes inserted into their DNA. But genes are not Legos; they don’t just snap into place. Gene insertion creates unpredicted, irreversible changes. In one study, for example, a gene chip monitored the DNA before and after a single foreign gene was inserted. As much as 5 percent of the DNA’s genes changed the amount of protein they were producing. Not only is that huge in itself, but these changes can multiply through complex interactions down the line.

Bottom line: Be careful in what you choose to feed your family! I know I’ll be much more selective from now on!
